Newcastle-Gateshead wins bid for Great Exhibition of the North 2018

The North East of England received some fantastic news this morning as it was announced that Newcastle-Gateshead has been chosen to host the Great Exhibition of the North in Summer 2018.

The event, which will bring together cultural, artistic and design innovators from all over the North to showcase their work, will run for 77 days.

All art works and events will be inspired by the exhibition’s theme: ‘The Blazing World – The Fires of Invention’. Not only does this title highlight the North’s history of industrial innovation and invention, and the region’s contribution to science over the centuries, it also harks back to the Victorian era and the age of the original Great Exhibitions that were held in London.

However, the Great Exhibition of the North will certainly not be a backward-looking enterprise, in fact it will be a celebration of the talent, skill and ambition at home in Newcastle-Gateshead and the rest of Northern England today.

Moreover, it invites us to look forward to the bright cultural future of the Northern Powerhouse which will be enhanced by investment and increased business and tourism drawn to the area by the Great Exhibition of the North.
