300 years of Ballet in Britain

Royal Opera House, London

Today marks the 300th anniversary of Britain’s first ballet performance.

On March 2nd 1717 a dancer and choreographer named John Weaver staged a rendition of The Loves of Mars and Venus which is now acknowledged to be the first performance of a ballet in the UK.

The ballet was performed at London’s Theatre Royal on Drury Lane, an historic venue which today is the oldest British theatre still in continuous use. Take in a show at this landmark institution during your visit to the capital or celebrate Britain’s balletic legacy another way…

The iconic Royal Opera House in Covent Garden is home to the Royal Ballet and this breathtakingly beautiful building makes the perfect setting for a truly special evening: sip on the best bubbles at the stylish champagne bar and dine with a view in one of the ROH’s excellent restaurants before sitting in the unforgettable opulence of the red and gilt theatre watching the world’s finest dancers perform before you.

London isn’t the only place where you can see the very best British ballet, there are programmes showcasing the UK’s dancing pride and passion all across the county in 2017. The English National Ballet will be performing beloved ballets Romeo & Juliet and The Nutcracker in ten different venues this year, while the Scottish Ballet takes on the Brothers Grimm fairytale Hansel & Gretel.
